Microsoft Office 2007 New File Format – and how to read !

Friday, November 21st, 2008

With the release of Vista Microsoft also released a new version of Office – they add on product that includes word, excel and outlook. Graphically it is very different to the previous versions, but it also includes a new file format that it saves in by default (eg. docx for word – rather than doc). This has caused a few problems for people with the previous versions of Office (2003, 2002/XP ). Microsoft have released a compatibility pack that enables older versions to read and write in the new format to accommodate this issue.Go to the following link from Microsoft – download and run the update, and then you will be able to support the latest file formats! DOWNLOAD HERE

Backing Up Email Accounts (Outlook & Outlook Express)

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

We often have to do new installs of windows, or move data between PCs. One of the most common issues we face is the email accounts – how to move them? The data files are fairly straight forward (we can see them…) but what about the accounts? To recap – heres where the files are stored:

Outlook Express:
Email folders (stored as folder like they appear in the Outlook Express Folder Tree) – C:\Documents and Settings\user account\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{…}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\
Address Book – C:\Documents and Settings\user account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\
They can both be imported via the File->Import Menu.

Outlook:
ALL email, calender, address book etc are in the .pst file in - C:\Documents and Settings\useraccount\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

Backup the ACCOUNT settings for each program
To save the Outlook Express Accounts – simply export them from within the program (Tools->Accounts->Mail->Export).
Under Outlook you will need to access the registry (via regedit.exe) and export the registry tree at – HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Outlook\OMI Account Manager

You can then import them into the new load of windows of new PC and be back and running in no time !
